Get out of town.
Make Music in the Mountains.
A mountain recording studio & retreat in Boise County, Idaho - for Americana, folk, Folk-punk Indie/Alt rock, Altcountry artists and more.
Middle Fork Studio is a working songwriter’s recording retreat tucked into the mountains north of Boise in Boise County, Idaho. Built for bands and artists who want time, space, and a real room instead of a ticking studio clock. I’m a touring musician and producer who’s spent years bouncing between stages all over the US, Nashville writers rooms and studios, and this little studio in the woods. I’ve designed this place to be what the sort of place I want to come home to and create, write and record. Now I am opening it up for other musicians to come an work here.
At the center of the room is a dedicated Pro Tools rig with Chameleon labs 7602 (Neve Clone) outboard preamps and a tube compressor. I’m still working off my older Pro Tools system at the moment, but it’s a setup I know inside and out, and it’s the same one I’ve used to make my own records while I plan the next round of upgrades. In the studio are a number of tools I actually use: a Vox AC15 and PRS Sonzera 20, a Genzler acoustic amp, a proper bass cab, a full drum kit, a Dammann Custom Instruments Mandocello and Altomando, a Guild D‑55, Weber Bitterroot mandolin, a brazillian made 5 course mandolin, tenor banjo, fifths‑tuned ukes, electric basses and a handful of other stringed instruments that find their way onto projects when it serves the song.
When you book here, you’re not just renting a room and some gear. You’re stepping into a small quiet place where you can record music without watching the clock, with a producer with multiple self produced albums and EPs completed under his belt and a few he has produced for other artists. You can stay on site in the tiny house, eat well, walk down to the river or into the hills between takes, and—if it fits the project—have me add mandolin, guitar, or bass, or help shape the arrangements as we go.
My goal is simple: give you a focused, honest recording experience in an environment that is almosy impossible to find in the city, and send you home with music that still feels like you when you listen back a year later.
All of this surrounded by multiple ways in which to recreate: from hiking and kayaking to fishing or even hunting for those who may be more adventurous (non-guided, those adventures would be on you). There are vendors in the area that will rent UTVs and mountain bikes, guided river rafting trips, and not too far away, there are opportunities for backpacking if you want to extend your time in the area.
